Match Report: Wandsworth Borough Women 6–2 Wealdstone FC
Sue Sharples Cup – Group Stage

Wandsworth Borough Women put on a fantastic display on Sunday, storming to a 6–2 victory over Wealdstone FC in the Sue Sharples Cup group stage. From back to front, the team showed strength, confidence, and great team spirit — a performance that leaves Borough full of optimism heading into their final group game.

Borough started brightly, controlling possession and setting the tempo early on. The defence of Rachel, Jade, and Charlie was rock solid throughout the first half. Jade led the backline brilliantly, reading the game and sweeping up danger, while Rachel pushed forward down the right flank to support Gemma, who was a constant thorn in Wealdstone’s side. Gemma’s energy, clever runs, and pinpoint crosses caused problems from the off.

Over on the left, Wiki made some fantastic runs supported by Charlie at the back and Jo and Kiera who worked tirelessly in midfield to link play with the attacking duo of Maria and Ella. Sophie had a quieter half in goal but stayed alert — coming off her line to clear through balls and distributing smartly to keep Borough on the front foot.

The breakthrough came from a brilliant free-kick from Ella, who fired into the back of the net to make it 1–0 Borough. Moments later, Gemma intercepted a loose ball from a goal kick, took a couple of touches, and unleashed a superb strike from outside the box — 2–0 Borough.

As Borough continued to press, some fresh legs came on with Dani slotting in on the left and Emily taking up position on the right — both immediately making their mark. Before the break, Borough added a third: Kiera picked out Ella with a perfect through ball, and Ella made no mistake, calmly finishing to grab her second of the match and put Borough 3–0 up at half-time.

A scrappy few minutes before the whistle tested Borough’s composure, but the team regrouped well as they headed into the break full of confidence.

Borough started the second half a little flat, but it didn’t take long for the rhythm to return. A well-worked corner routine saw Gemma cross into the box, have the ball come back to her, and deliver another pinpoint ball — this time Ella was waiting to slot home her third and complete a brilliant hat-trick. 4–0 Borough.

The team continued to push forward, staying composed amid some tough challenges and a few debatable calls. Another corner brought goal number five: Gemma’s delivery caused chaos, the ball bounced around the box, Elena got a touch, and Jo finished with a cracking volley — 5–0 Borough.

Moments later, Gemma sealed a standout performance with her second of the game, pressing high, winning possession, and curling home another stunning long-range strike — 6–0 and game over.

In the final 15 minutes, Wealdstone fought back bravely, pulling two goals back — one slipping just under Sophie, and another well-taken shot from distance — but Borough stayed in control to see out the game.

A huge 6–2 win for Wandsworth Borough — full of energy, teamwork, and some fantastic goals. This. was a real team performance that shows just how strong this side can be.

With one group match left against Balham in two weeks’ time, the team will be looking to build on this result and secure a spot in the next round of the Sue Sharples Cup.
