Having started the GLWF league campaign with an away win last week, the ladies worked hard in training on Thursday night before kicking off their first home fixture at Richardson Evans on a sunny Sunday morning versus a fit and young Sutton United U21's side.

Without joint Vice-Captain Motty and new signing Becky Michaelson to lead the front line, Borough shaped up with the returning Gemma Manley and Lisa Manley, with debuts for Emma Green and Simi Isaacson.

From the off, it became apparent that Sutton was a young side, well organised and knew how to ping the ball about, and Borough shaped themselves to combat this. Still, despite a frantic first 10 minutes, Borough took advantage of the movement of midfielder Meg Ward, who perfectly rounded the keepers' efforts to bring her down and slot in with her left foot after many tumbles. 1-0 Borough!

The following 15 minutes, however, were not in Newland's game plan, and despite making a superb triple save, keeper Maureen McAllister was victim to the eager ref's book and found herself on the receiving end of a red card. Penalty to Sutton, which saw Borough go 2-1 down inside 20 minutes, with Jay Verry Justicia donning the gloves.

The halftime break was welcomed, and the ladies regrouped with words of wisdom from both Assistant Manager Emma Connell and Manager David Newland. The 10 from Borough quickly came out of the blocks. Despite conceding once more to a free-kick on the edge of the box, they soon found themselves 4-3 ahead with a perfectly timed run from the emphatic Meg Ward, assisted by Jay Verry Justicia for the second time, and a sensational 'goal of the season contender' from Borough legend Kirsty Mulcahey.

The second half continued to be as fast-paced as the first 45 minutes with instructions and appeals coming from both benches, and the ladies were unlucky to concede an own goal to bring Sutton level. 10 minutes remaining and all to play for, both sides attacked, and the game began to open up. Both sides came close to grabbing the winner, but Sutton succeeded with a superb counterattack before their midfielder cooly glanced the ball over the oncoming Jay Verry Justicia's head, who had been superb since taking the gloves. Borough was not going down without a fight, and close attempts from Kirsty Mulcahey and Meg Ward were saved by the impressive substitute U's keeper.

Despite the 5-4 loss, there's plenty of positives to take into this weeks game as the ladies hit the road again to face South London Women Reserves. Onwards and upwards!
