Ladies report

WBFC Women 2 – 2 AFC Wimbledon Girls (U18)

Goals: Ward, Mulcahey (pen)

Assists: Mott

PoM: Lois Freedman

As in previous games the ladies got off to a slow but steady start. After about 5 minutes we started to play our football, stringing good passes together and putting pressure on AFC. A great sequence of passes starting from the back and working down the left hand side, then being crossed into the middle to find Meg, who was able to slot the ball past their keeper in the 9th minute. WBFC were 1-0 up.

This lifted everyone up and we pushed on as a team. AFC were pushing back and making some good runs forward but were successfully closed down by a strong backline. A clearance from our goalkeeper Amy found Motty in midfield, who was tackled by the opposition and unfortunately went down in agony with what proved to be a dislocated knee. This forced a break in the game as we waited for the ambulance to arrive. Once Motty was safely on her way to hospital and high on gas and air, play resumed.

Woody came on to the left of midfield, pushing Chantal upfront. It was obvious that the accident had an impact on the team as AFC were attacking hard. In the 37th minute AFC equalized leaving it 1-1 at half time.

Only one change at half time, Fran came on at left back for Sophie. WBFC were fighting hard but seemed unable to make our chances count. 65 minuets in and a quick change saw Katie come on upfront for Chantal. We had won a corner and pushed forward to try and get something on the end of it, unfortunately AFC won the ball and made a break for it, we were unable to get back quick enough and this led to us conceding a goal making it 1-2.

We quickly got our heads up and began to pull together, producing some good football. In the 75th minute Dani came on to right mid for Nic and shortly after Chantal returned to the pitch for Woody.

By this point we were digging in deep and Lois was doing a great job at shutting their left mid down and preventing anything making it in to our box. After some great play from our midfield Charlie powered through the middle causing the defender to pull her down just inside of their box, winning a penalty. Kirsty stepped up and confidently buried the ball in the back of the net in the 85th minute. We fought hard for the final 5 minutes but were unable to make it count. After what was an emotional and eventful game it finished 2-2 and we were very happy with the point.

We would all like to wish Motty a speedy recovery and we all send our love and best wishes.
