The second game of the season and the whole team was raring to go drawing a line under last week's game and starting a clean slate.
With a delay to the game starting due to the referee being late, the ladies kept their focus on the game ahead, as well as doing a little bit of gardening in between due to the pitch being covered in weeds. The pitch wasn’t looking great!
Finally, the referee arrived and the game kicked off. The game started fairly evenly with chances being made for both teams. The Ladies communicated well with each other and tried to make as many chances as possible but still couldn’t seem to make things work in the final third and put away a goal. Sporting Duet came at us a fair few times with Amy making some great saves and being well utilised as a Sweeper Keeper. Ash also adapted well to filling in as left-back and made some good challenges and interceptions. Duet seemed dangerous from their corners which we defended well.
Unfortunately, during one of these corners, Kayleigh brilliantly headed the ball to safety which caused for an early departure after being momentarily knocked out. Luckily, Kayleigh recovered and watch from the sidelines and after being checked out in the evening was given the all-clear and just needs to rest up for a couple of weeks. Get well soon Kay!
A few tactical changes were made, however, straight on the stroke of half-time Duet had another corner which this time they were able to head home a goal. Half-time and the ladies were determined to come back strong in the second half.
Wandsworth got the second half underway and started off fairly attacking. It was clear the team was eager to get an equaliser. Five minutes into the second half and Wandsworth was awarded a free kick in a dangerous position. Kirsty stepped up to take the free-kick and converted it very nicely into the top hand corner of the goal! 1-1.
Borough continued to make chances and built up play utilising our left-hand side more throughout the second half. We kept persevering but unfortunately after a quick breakaway Duet were able to slot home another goal leaving Borough on the back-foot. 2-1.
Determined, the players bounced back together and continued to do our utmost to ensure we got an equaliser. Borough remained caught out a couple of times. Amy adopted great positioning and made a fantastic save to keep us in the game. Almost at the 90-minute mark and the players starting to feel the strain of playing on such a hard ground, we took advantage of a free-kick. A free-kick was awarded in Borough's half which Kirsty placed wonderfully in Duet’s box and all Megan had to do was tap it home!
2-2.
The final whistle went, and although we still have some work to do as we are gelling as a new team, we displayed some great play and teamwork which we should all be proud of. It’s only the second game of the season but it’s clear we’ve still got a lot to bring to the table. Bring on our first home game of the season!
