So Wandsworth Borough Ladies lined up against Molesey on Sunday to kick off their first home game of their league campaign. The ladies had played two previous away games suffering a tough defeat to Leatherhead Under 18s on the opening day of the season and then an unfortunate draw with Sporting Duet the following week. One point from a possible six meant the ladies really wanted to turn things around and start on a positive at their home venue.

This looked very likely early on as the ladies exploded into action with sending balls both down the right to Nichola Taylor and the left to Gemma Manley which saw crosses fly in towards the striker's Laura Mott and Leah Wilkinson. Narrow misses or saved shots rattled the young opposition and the ladies were very much on the front foot. The return of Hannah Richards into the centre of midfield provided Kirsty Mulchahey the opportunity to play the 10 role and have free movement to get up and down and cause the oppo centre backs a lot of grief. This was capitalised upon when Kirsty's long-range strike from 25 yards flew into the top left corner of the net and gave the ladies the boost they needed.

Continued attacks through the centre and down the wings from the ladies were looking promising but sadly with nothing else to show for their efforts. The opposition equalised a short while after despite the best efforts of our top class sweeper-keeper Amy Jenkins. As half time drew nearer Wandsworth ladies defence were a lot busier than had previously been with left-back Sophie Kelly and Right back Rachel Marshall putting in a bit of overtime as Molesey attacked down both flanks. Centre backs Hannah Sanderson and Chloe Russell put several tackles in and won several headers to keep out the Molesey strikers and Amy Jenkins did an amazing job stopping several more of their shots going in. Half-time whistle and a well-deserved rest and team talk from the gaffer.

The second half kicked off just as explosively as the first half with both teams attacking hard. Five minutes in and Molesey got a corner from one of their attacks which then lead to a second corner straight after. Poor marking of their striker saw her head it home at the near post and the ladies found themselves behind for the first time in the game. An uphill battle on their hands now and after another 15 minutes of battling and trying without success, some tactical changes came from the gaffer. Nichola Taylor off, Gemma Manley over to the right-wing and Katie Braithwaite on at left wing.

A few more goes from the ladies without success and not very many shots generated saw more changes from the gaffer a few minutes later. Hannah Richards off, Lisa Manley into centre mid, Lois on at left-back, Leah and Laura off, Gemma up top with Sophie and Woody on at right-wing. Now the game changed and within minutes the ladies were attacking and shooting at will. A cross in from Katie Braithwaite saw a near miss and then a follow up from Woody at the back post saw the ladies equalise spectacularly.

All to play for now and the ladies pushed up and went for the win. Sadly they were hit on the break with a long swooping ball over the top and Amy just could not keep this one out. A very bitter defeat to swallow for the ladies but they will be back in action against Civil Service hoping to pick up three points and their first win of the season.
