Molesey 4 – 2 Wandsworth Borough FC Women
POTM: Charlie Spencer
Goals: Meg Ward & Kirsty Mulcahey
Assists: Katie Braitwaite & Meg Ward
Following on from the closely fought game the previous week with Sporting Duet, The Borough Ladies travelled to Molesey FC Women looking to get back on the winning trail once again and gain revenge for the 3-2 home loss earlier in the season.
The Ladies squad of 13, depleted by injury and illness, arrived at Molesey FC Men’s stadium in good spirts and looking forward to the challenge ahead, this despite the weather not being very favourable for either side. With a well prepared warm up & team talk from Gaffer David Newland, the ladies were ready & set to go into battle!
Both sides started the opening minutes of the game brightly with end to end action, with the Ladies taking control of most of the half with the impressive Katie Braithwaite & Dani Cardoso threatening down the flanks causing all sorts of problems for the defence with their pace and crosses into the middle.
In a 10minute spell the Ladies could & probably should have been out of sight if it wasn’t for the efforts of the Molesey goalkeeper and the woodwork!
On 12mins our first chance of the game, in which again Braithwaite driving down the left and with a ball cross the edge of the 18yeard box the waiting Kirsty Mulcahey, who took one touch and strike a fierce shot towards goal… only for the stand in goalkeeper to make a great save to her left. Boro on top!
3mins later, great build up down the right-hand side saw Laura Mott & Kirsty combining once again but again the keeper was on hand to deny Motty and Boro. A minute or so later, Boro still attacking from the Motty effort, the ball falls to the ever impressive Charlie Spencer who beats a couple of players and from the edge of the 18yard box cracks a thunderous shot towards goal, only to see the effort canon back off the crossbar with the goalkeeper a mere spectator on this occasion.
Molesey had their moments in which they looked like they could threaten the Boro defence, but the back line of Ashlee Armstrong, Emma Connell, Rachel Marshall & Khadejah Oban stood firm. & when they were breached the ever-consistent Amy Jenkins would be there to clear up.
25mins in and Boro yet again had another effort on goal. This time a corner from the right floated in and with Molesey at sixes and sevens, Meg Ward found space to head the ball towards goal, only for it to miss by inches. Boro firmly on top and playing some fantastic football.
The home side started to get frustrated as they couldn’t get a foot hold of the game and frustration boiled over from the sidelines as well as their number 7 who decided to chop down Kirsty and dually picked up a yellow card.
As the half time approached and again with the ladies firmly on top and dominating the opening half, finally the goal arrived that the ladies truly deserved. Again Katie down the left hand side, Katie turned back onto her right foot to hold up play, before knocking a ball into the danger zone. Confusion at the back allowed Meg to ghost in and take advantage bundling the ball over the line to make it 1-0 to Boro on 38mins.
Half Time arrived with the Boro gaffer very pleased with the first half performance but warned that the next 45mins would be even tougher with Molesey looking to come back into the game. Same tactics as before with gentle reminds to the threats that Molesey posed.
The 2nd half started fairly evenly with both sides showing early promise with half chances either end and not really troubling either goalkeepers.
Boro substitution saw the Dani come off for a breather for the returning Nicola Taylor. Unfortunately for Nic & her Boro teammates it was a short-lived appearance following a nasty ankle injury. Get Well Soon Nic!
Following the length stoppage for the injury, Boro looked to get back on with the game but where hit on the counterattack with Molesey’s lively number 15 latching onto a through ball before calmly slotting past the on rushing Amy in goal. 1-1.
It was game on again for both sides and the Molesey management team decided to up the heat of the game but for the wrong reasons. Calling out to the Boro ladies and then deciding to vent their anger and frustrations to the Boro bench. The ever-cool & Funny gaffer, Dave Newland stood laughing at them before Mr Muscles (And Chairmen) himself Andy Proudfoot stood in front of the gaffer to ensure all was ok…. Thanks Andy, I had it all under control (Street cred gone now lol)
Perfect response from the players would be a goal and Kirsty dually stepped up and smashed in another long range shot that sailed in the top corner of the net. Something of a trademark of hers this season. 2-1 to the Boro!!
Molesey had nothing to lose and piled on the pressure to find an equaliser to try get themselves back into the game. 4mins after taking the lead, Boro were level at 2-2. Again a ball through the middle found number 15 who cooler slotted in her second of the game. The Molesey bench celebrating like they had one a cup final and ensure their actions were aimed at the Boro bench. Laughable… The Mitchell brothers were enjoying their day out from the day centre that was for sure…… Another sub for Boro saw Motty replaced by the hard working Leah Wilkinson upfront for the final 25mins of the game.
Heart break right at the death with Molesey again taking a 3-2 lead on the 90mins mark, similar to the home game in which they won in dying seconds of the game. Again Number 15 bagging Molesey’s and her 3rd of the day. Gutted.
Boro piled on the pressure in injury time and had a couple of chances before a break away goal from a corner saw number 15 make it four for her and 4-2 to Molesey!
The Boro ladies came off the field gutted at the result but gaffer Dave Newland was quick to praise the teams effort. And reaffirm the football that the ladies played was played in the right manner (unlike the Mitchell brothers side who just wanted to kick lumps out of players and offer up fights in the car park… thankfully Andy was on hand…). And also they should be proud of the performance and how far the side has come in the year we have worked together. Performances are there… Results will soon follow!
