It seems fairly repetitive to say this now, but only a squad of bare eleven were available for the away game to Comets FC at Clapham Common. Even worse news for the players that were already doing the warm up, we had to start the game with NINE players!!

This would be a huge test for the players against a team in good form who are currently top of the league. There was no Darren available due to a medical emergency, so Andy Proudfoot willingly stepped in to act as manager for the Ladies. Andy introduced a new formation which we'd never played before, but at this point what did we have to lose?

An apprehensive Wandsworth Borough took to the field and the referee signalled the game to begin. The three players at the back, Emma, Kayleigh and Lisa were tested early on, but their attack was no match to the discipline and strength defensively. The communication was brilliant throughout the whole of the Borough team with Laura and Hannah dropping back to help cover the attacking runs through the middle, and Leah and Cherene covering the overlaps on the wings. Francine was playing upfront but with very little service she did her best at holding the ball up waiting for support. Scotty had another very good game, commanding his goal and not letting anything beat him.

Graham must have been frantically ringing round players from the side-lines as Tara and Roxy turned up to muck in and help the team out. Borough left the field at half time having held the opposition to a 0-0 draw, with moments of the game dropping to eight players. Every single individual on that pitch gave it their all and couldn't be happier to come off the pitch at half time without conceding and holding Comets to a draw.

The second half began even. Borough still being tested defensively, and with the aim being focusing on not conceding there were very little attacking chances for us. Tiredness seemed to have got the better of us midway through the second half as one of the wingers cut inside the Borough box and had a shot. Scotty must have just got his fingertips to it but not enough to tip it round the post. 1-0 Comets. At this point, I can start to see Borough heads drop, purely just down to the fact we'd battled for so long with less players. We felt cheated. Comet's second goal came from them retrieving the ball out on the wing and playing the ball right across the goal mouth with their attacker just waiting to poke it home.

Another disappointing result for Wandsworth Borough, but the passion, team spirit and willingness to do well was clear for everyone to see.

I'm sure it was a really tough decision for Graham and Andy to vote for their player of the match with everyone putting in an excellent performance, but it was Laura Mott who won the vote.
