GAME 'PETERS' TO A FINISH AS 6s GRIND OUT OPENING WIN

The increasingly prolific Peter Matuska scored twice as Boro secured a first league win since 14th March to kick off this season with a valuable three away points.

In an eventful game in picturesque Bexley, Sweeney thought he had put Boro ahead in the tenth minute when he stormed into the opposition area and powered a shot low to the keeper’s left, only to see a miraculous save turn the ball round the post for a corner.

That set the pattern for the rest of the half, with all the Boro forwards guilty of squandering gilt-edged chances and stand-in keeper Neil Watkins having to stay alert to keep the home side from scoring on the break.

The game needed an injection of quality and duly got it following the introduction of Matuska towards the end of the first half. Having watched from the sidelines as a succession of low efforts were saved by the excellent opposition keeper, Matuska decided to try taking him out of the equation with an attempted lob on the stroke of half time. 1-0 to Boro.

Shortly after the break, the hosts found themselves two down as another lobbed effort by Matuska – this time a sumptuous first time clip over the goalkeeper’s head from outside the box – found the back of the net.

Now facing (both figuratively and literally) an uphill battle just after having switched ends at half time, Old St Mary’s heads began to drop and they found it more and more difficult to get high enough up the pitch to create chances. With fitness levels beginning to tell on a rock hard surface in the baking sunlight, the referee eventually grew bored enough to blow the final whistle, enabling a maximum of six Wandsworth players to head down the pub to responsibly celebrate starting the new season with a win.
