AFC: 5 South / Report by Thomas Gannon

Borough’s 5s had the delight of the long trip to Woking to kick off the new campaign in these strange times. Still technically the league's new boys, having won the league below in the last completed season. The sun was shining, but unfortunately, that was the early highlight with the first 25 mins showing not much football had been played during the summer, scrappy play by all with the ball off the pitch more than it was on it. Welcome back to Saturday league football!

Woking were looking the most threatening with breaks from midfield but the Borough broke the deadlock slightly against the run of play with a great ball from Joe Charsley on the left-wing right in the danger zone between keeper and defence, that let new debutant George Neame take advantage and stab home for a debut goal. Another goal quickly followed in similar fashion with Seamus Brennan taking advantage this time. With the two-goal cushion established, Captain Gannon subbed himself off to top up on the sunblock and follow Adam Traore’s tekkers to add the baby oil to the arms. Two more goals quickly followed as Borough took advantage of a good spell before half-time, Neame grabbing his second and vice Hinkins latching on to a gorgeous through ball from roaming CB Jack Cooper, to lob the onrushing keeper. Just as half time approached Dom Szablowski decided to literally take his ball home after deciding he didn’t like the striker's challenge, queue indirect freekick with the oppo pouncing on confusion in the Borough box. Half-time 4-1 to the Borough.

Following the restart, new debutants in the form of the da Silva family added some much needed South American swagger to the team. Woking came out the second half with greater hunger and pulled a couple of goals back, with set-pieces again proving problematic for Borough. Seamus Brennan provided some much-needed relief finishing off a great counter-attacking move to provide the two-goal advantage again. With the opposition tiring but still trying to play it out from the back, think Arsenal not Man City for execution, Borough won the ball high up the pitch more often creating more chances. Another debutant registering a first Boro goal, Zaki da Silva showing son Leo how to finish. Great interlinking play upfront from Charsley, Brennan and Pringle rounded off the win with two more goals from Charsley and Pringle. Final score 8-3.

Good start to the league campaign with the 5s following Leeds United's early example, providing the crowds with plenty of bang for their bucks. Plus five goal difference sees Borough taking top spot in the table. Some very bright spots of play but with plenty to work provides the possibility of a strong title challenge. UTB!
