LOB Olympian Cup - Quarter-Final / Report by Matt Hurst

Wandsworth 5s continued their impressive cup run with an overwhelming victory away vs Old Suttonians 7s.

Early in the first half, it became evident that Old Suttonians 7s' defence could not contend with Wandsworth’s blistering attacking force. After some good work down the left flank Joe Charlsey provided a pinpoint cross into the box for the marauding Seamus Brennan to stroke majestically into the bottom left corner.

Sam White, fresh off a flight from Australia and showing no sign of jet-lag, made it two to the good with a Messi-esque free-kick, whipped with such ferocity into the top left-hand corner that even David De Gea would have been helpless to stop it.

Borough thought they had gone three up before half time when Sam White dispatched a penalty confidently into the bottom right corner, sending the keeper the wrong way in the process. However, the referee had obviously been watching too much MOTD as he disallowed the goal due to encroachment by a couple of unnamed overeager Wandsworth players. Unfortunately, it was at this point that the jetlag hit Sam and he put the retake over the bar.

Just before half time Old Suttonians 7s won a rare corner and due to some lax marking from the Borough a free header was put just wide. This would prove to be the only meaningful chance Old Suttonians 7s would create in the match.

Duncan Mackenzie, gallantly standing in at centre-back, was imperious in the air with his unique heading technique, combining with Jack Cooper, Harry King, and Cal Lewis to ensure that the opposition's attack was effectively neutralised for almost the entire match. Chizzle Harrison had so little to do in goal he managed to read War and Peace cover to cover (no mean feat whilst wearing goalkeeper gloves).

Within the first two minutes of the second half, the mauling continued. Joe Charlsey picked out an intelligent run behind the Old Suttonians 7s' defence from Will Fox who elegantly headed the ball over the oncoming goalkeeper for Wandsworth’s third.

A poacher’s goal from Sam White and an aggressively pinpoint free-kick into the top right-hand corner from Joe Charlsey sealed the points. In truth, it could have been more with Mark Pringle unlucky not to get onto the scoresheet, and Sam White denied his hat-trick by a couple of wonderful saves from Old Suttonians 7s' keeper.

If The Borough keep performing to this standard they are in with a great shout of winning the cup. Bring on the semi-final!
