AFC: 5 South / Report by Jack Wignall

Wandsworth Borough 5s continued their climb up the league with an impressive 5-1 victory against top of the league Reigatians at Richardson Evans Memorial Ground.

Using Mike Basset’s favourite formation, Borough started with Mark Cooper in net, Jonny, Tex, Wiggy and The King across the back. Gannon and Pete anchored the centre of midfield while Andy and Tim provided the width with Sam and Pringle leading the attack.

In horrendous conditions, Borough took the lead thanks to Peter Wilkins scoring with his very first touch in a Borough shirt nodding in a header after a scramble in the opponent’s box. Borough’s delight was short lived however as Reigations equalised soon after. A mishit goal kick meant their big striker found the ball at his feet and an empty net ahead of him. 1-1.

Nevertheless, just five minutes later Borough were ahead once again with a goal direct from a corner. Gannon somehow beating the men at the front post to score his first goal of the season (should be noted he tried this again five minutes later and hit the side netting). Despite being on top for the first half, Borough would have gone in level if it wasn’t for a fantastic save from goalkeeper Cooper who produced a strong one-handed diving save to avenge for his earlier mistake and ensure Borough went into the break with the 2-1 advantage.

Borough came out for the second half and hit the ground running immediately, racing into a 4-1 win only 5 mins into the second half. Charsley managed to find some room at the back post to score a few minutes into the second half. Then, some great link-up play between the midfield led to White sending a cross-field ball over where substitute Charlsley was able to compose himself before firing his second into the top corner. Borough were not allowing the opposition any time on the ball, playing some great football up top while the entire defence held firm against an opponent who couldn’t get a foothold in the game through the second half

The icing on the cake came when Charlsley was again found at the back post and finished past the keeper to complete his hat-trick. A very impressive team performance from Borough who were the better team to a man all over the park. Playing some extremely eye-catching football in wet and slippy conditions lead to a successful Saturday beating both the opposition and the elements in the same afternoon

Borough 5s march on.
