The fifth team welcomed Woking to Richardson Evans on Saturday in a potential 7 South title decider. Both teams could guarantee promotion with a win and the sides were also level on points in the league. The business end of the season had arrived.

Seamus Brennan was back from his 3 game suspension and he certainly made sure everyone knew it. His first contribution was injuring our keeper, Chizzle, in the warm up with a fierce shot that led to a sprained wrist. Chizzle started the game but within 10 minutes it quickly came clear he couldn’t continue. Captain Coops then took the gloves for the remainder of the game.

It would have been easy for everyone’s heads to drop with such a set back in our most important match this season but the fifths battled on like they had done all season. Some nice movement and exchanges of passes up front led to our first clear cut chance for Seamus but their keeper got down well to win his first (and only) 1v1. Woking responded by smashing the crossbar with a bullet header.

Again though the Boro rebuilt, Connor putting a nice through ball into Seamus who was charging into the box before being taken out. A blatant penalty bizarrely turned down by the ref standing in the centre circle.

Half time ended 0-0, both sides having chances but the Boro probably edged it and deserved to be in front.

Woking came out storming in the second half and had us under pressure straight away. The Boro hadn’t settled whilst Woking enjoyed corner after corner. Against the run of play Hinkins played a delightful ball behind the defence, Brennan chased after it, went round the keeper and sent the ball trickling over the line.

Woking again almost scored from a corner, Jack Cooper throwing himself on the line to block a certain goal. This turned into what seemed a 22 man pile up 1 yard out from our goal line with Keeper Coops diving in like a scrum half to get his hands on the ball to win a free kick. Such desire to win has been present all season which is why our league position is no surprise.

We were 1-0 up with 15 mins to play, cue an absolute goal fest. Seamus added a second before Woking got one back. At this point the Boro reacted magnificently and scored a third straight from kick off. The fourth, fifth and sixth followed soon after.
The scoreline didn’t reflect how tight the game was for 75 mins but an amazing performance from all the players. Promotion guaranteed but we’re hungry for the title.
