The fourteen 5th team lads that arrived were extremely up for a derby match against our local rivals and keen to maintain our title challenge.

We flew out the blocks straight away and were putting the opposition under pressure almost immediately. Dennis Wise (M Cooper) was brought down when trying to get through 1v1 on the keeper. The resulting free kick saw Vinnie Jones (J Wignall) neatly dink it into the path of J Cooper who finished like John Fashanu. The second came 2 mins later, Laurie Cunningham (C Hearty) putting the ball through for Wise who finished at the second attempt. The third followed 2 mins later, a long ball was headed down by Wise into the path of Cunningham, who struck an incredible half volley into the top corner.
We had scored 3 goals in what felt like 5 minutes. Cue bedlam. Their centre back had started some handbags for no reason but then Vinnie Jones came flying in typical Vinnie Jones fashion. As Duncan Mackenzie (Clive Goodyear) eloquently described, picture yourself going down a fast slide at a water park, with your arms crossed and then you just run at someone. Their centre back fell to the floor and then the opposition keeper ran half the length of the pitch to headbutt Vinnie. Amen.

A red card each and both teams down to 10 men. Despite both teams being down a man, for the first time in the match Old Thorntonians started to apply some pressure. However it was the borough that scored again, Lawrie Sanchez (M Hurst) with a long range effort hitting the back of the net. The oppositions best chance of the half was a free kick that was tipped over by Dave Beasant (C Harrison)

Half time and it was 4-0. L Sanchez had a premonition of his future Fulham management days and came up with a good 10 man formation that duly helped us out. Cunningham and Alan Cork (L Hurst) continued to terrorise the opposition’s defence.

Cunningham was brought down in the box by the keeper and Cork duly despatched the resulting penalty. Cunningham who was having a great day then followed it up to make it 6-0.

Old Thorntonians came back with one goal and we helped them out with an own goal by Andy Thorn (J Thomas).

Great performance by the fifth team. Bring on Woking next week! UTB.
