AFC: 7 South / Report by Jack Tecwyn

A massive game against the thuggy John Fisher, who were one point behind us before kick off.

Things didn't go well even before the game had started. The kick-ick-off been re-scheduled to 1pm with the ref well and truly informed having acknowledged an email earlier in the week regarding the change to the time. Come 1.15pm there was still no sign of the ref. Eventually the opposition captain got through to him, and he wasn't even on the way to the ground having claimed to have not been made aware of the change (which was absolute b*llocks clearly). He eventually arrived well after 1.45pm and we were underway. It was a sign of things to come...

The Boro started well and were the better side for the majority of the half, boosted by a 2s midfield of Outhwaite and Glover. We eventually went ahead from a corner (3 goals in 3 games from corners now having had virtually 0 goals in 3 years). Some good battling in the box by Outhwaite caused the ball to loop up for Jack Cooper to powerfully header in for his 2nd goal in as many games. The Boro were comfortable and in no bother really. Then things started to go wrong. A long free kick from the opposition into the box was seemingly headed away cleanly by us and the ref blew his whistle. Free kick to us?? No - PENALTY!!! To say we were completely baffled and fuming would be an understatement. Literally not one of their players appealed for it (it was apparently for a shirt tug that no one saw). They stuck the penalty away. 1-1 at half time.

We spoke at half time about keeping our discipline in the face of the injustice we had just had...

The second half began and much like the first we started the stronger. Went 2-1 ahead with a good finish by Brennan. We looked in no trouble whatsoever and then a 2nd baffling decision by the ref. Keeper Chizzle made a save and didn't pick up the ball, the opposition ran away so Chizzle just kept the ball at his feet until one of the opposition came to close him down. He picked the ball up and the referee unbelievably gave an indirect free kick. The explanation made no sense whatsoever, Chizzle had clearly not picked the ball up and rolled it out before picking it up again so it was total bullsh*t. Inevitably they stuck the free kick in and it was 2-2. Captain Cooper was shortly sin-binned afterwards for arguing.

They stuck the 3rd goal in to take the lead. Brennan was then also sin-binned to leave us with 9 players on the pitch for 5 minutes. They then scored a 4th. We'd gone from being 2-1 up and comfortable to being down to 9 men and 4-2 down in the space of 10 minutes!

We looked as if we were out of it but we battled on. A good ball through from White through to Outhwaite left him clear through only to be taken out - penalty to us this time (but rightly!). White stepped up having not missed yet this season, only to scuff it wide. We then shortly got another penalty for handball. This time Captain Cooper stepped up only to blaze over this time! So we could have actually been level again at this point. A few minutes later another penalty for handball. This time Glover stepped up and it was 3rd time lucky as he slotted in. Too little too late though. Finished 4-3.

A horror show of a second half. The referee, a complete lack of discipline on our behalf and missed penalties cost us. Unbeaten league record over and off top spot. If this game costs us the league title will be very sad.
