AFC: 7 South / Report by Mark Cooper

In Saturday’s vile weather, the 5s fought and toiled hard to win in the end quite comfortably.

With no team dominating proceedings from the off, it was a relief when Huxter won a controversial penalty in the eyes of some. A few thought he went over a bit like Michael Owen against Argentina in the 2002 World Cup and I think he even let out a little scream. The penalty was despatched by Cooper (Beckham) in similar fashion.

Reigate responded well and overloaded the central midfield with plenty of bodies. It looked like it was going to be a tough day in difficult conditions only to be made worse by Sam running through on goal only to blaze the ball high wide and handsome. With Reigate searching for an equaliser, Luke all of a sudden scored two identical goals in quick succession that took the game away from Reigate. Both times a ball in behind from Jonny on the left led to Luke flicking the ball over the keeper’s head twice.

Half-time was a case of taking shelter and putting on jumpers rather than inspiring ourselves to another 60 mins of football in horrible weather (referee seemed to have difficulty with her watch throughout the game).

The second half was a case of survival, the pitch was now looking like a WW1 battlefield rather than a football pitch. The quality of football deteriorated just as quickly as the pitch. Joe proceeded to steal the miss of the season honour from Harry King, somehow missing from 1 yard out. Very similar to Kanu in West Brom colours.

In the end, we managed to put two past the opposition in the 2nd half to secure 3 points and top of the league over Christmas. With Woking theoretically one point behind and Brent two points behind, the second half the season is going to be very interesting.

First up in 2019... Brent.
