AFC: 7 South / Report by Mark Cooper

For the 2nd successive week, most of the 5s turned up with minutes to spare before kick off. The footballs were securely locked away in the boot of Tim’s Ford Focus… however, Tim was also ordering a £10 pint in Copenhagen at precisely the point we needed them most!

This cavalier approach however seems to be paying dividends. It was also applied to a lack of goalkeeper, who we managed to sign up approximately 10 mins before kick off. We were warned he had no boots, no shin pads, hadn’t played football in years and wait for it… had never played in goal before. We were therefore quite keen to nick a ball off the opposition just to test if he could catch. Otherwise the incredibly reliable 3 ft Ricky was going to deputise. Upon arrival our goalkeeper introduced himself as Andy Strachan… which was quickly passed on to the referee… “he’s called Andy!!!”

You will be pleased to know Andy passed the simple game of ‘catch’ with flying colours… so much so he had an excellent game and very much kept the 5s in the game throughout. The arrival of Andy meant that Ricky could play out on the pitch. All the 5s are very much glad that Ricky has returned to the 5s as his experience and calmness at the back is very much relied upon… we missed this lad last season and hope he gets over this achilles injury as soon as possible! WE NEED HIM BACK!

Anyway, the game kicked off, Joe Thomas managed to head an off-target shot (it was on target... but don't tell Joe) from Sinjuns into our own net so against the run of play we were 1-0 down. We were shocked but so were Sinjuns who hadn’t threatened until Joe helped out.

We didn’t panic, fortunately Storm Callum was on our side and all the play was being blown quite literally towards the Sinjuns' end. We must have broken the world record for the most corners won in one half of football…. but still managed not to score from a single one. The equaliser eventually came from some nice build-up play and a through ball pounced on by HK. HK then proceeded to score the winner, but did profit from three bites of the cherry on that occasion!

Whilst we dominated the 1st half, Sinjuns very much had the better of the 2nd half but we held on till the end. We had two great opportunities at the death which fell to Sam White who both times was unlucky not to do better.

Despite hanging on, this was a good result against a team that were relegated from a higher division last season. Next up is top of the league which I am sure with the right confidence and a lack of Friday night beers, is an encounter we can come out on top of. UTB
