GOAL OF THE SEASON LAST WEEK - MISS OF THE SEASON THIS WEEK?

Five minutes left on the clock, Wandsworth Borough had piled every man forward for the corner. A great delivery comes in with Harry King two yards out and the goal gaping…. how it didn’t end up in the back of the net is up there with the greatest football mysteries. Why could Lampard and Gerrard not play together? How do Sin Bins work again? How did the ball from 2 yards out bounce over and somehow end up on the roof of the net? The honour of the 5s 'Miss of the Season' fell to Billy Crow last year (probably out trumped Harry's to be fair) but it looks like HK is a strong contender already two games in. Old Grantonians’ reaction was a mixture of relief and pure laughter. Fortunately, the Borough did get some luck that day and had the last laugh…

In a game of few chances, the only action I can remember from the 1st half was constant pleas for the referee to get his cards out from the oppo, admittedly there were some strong tackles but fortunately, we had a strong referee who managed the game excellently throughout. If Old Grantonians had use of VAR, the match might still be playing now!

The oppo scored a great goal in the 2nd half with their skipper running away from goal and managed to sweetly strike a volley into the back of the net. Belger who had a great game had no chance on this particular occasion.

A loss would have been harsh on the 5s who probably had the better chances throughout the game. After the famous miss, we managed to win another corner in the last minute which resulted in a jubilant equaliser via an own goal. We deserved a point at least, but on another day victory could have gone to either side.

Great credit should go to the lads for not giving up to the final whistle against a team that were much better than last week’s opposition who play in the division above (how does that work!?).

Next week we head back home to play Clissold Park 2s (again) in a different cup.
