AFA: Senior Novets Cup - Preliminary Round / Report by Mark Cooper

Leading into this game, the 5s had been spanked by the 4s and were incredibly fortunate to have beaten the 6s the previous weekend. Pre-season had not gone to plan and we now had to play a team in the division above. The odds were stacked against us and we had no goalkeeper until a last minute call Saturday morning convinced a very hungover Chizzle to drag himself out of bed. To combat our lack of attacking prowess, Coops managed to grab Des's (1st team manager) tactics book which was very keenly shared Friday night. However, it was decided that was far too complicated and effort would have to beat ability.

Lining up in Mike Bassett's favourite formation, we started brightly and ran around like mad men. It quickly paid off and Coops managed to flick on a header to tee up Jordan who rolled the ball in the back of the net through the keeper's legs. The bright start quickly meant exhaustion set in and we just about managed to hang on with a 1-0 lead at half-time.

At half-time the message was clear, let's continue to work extremely hard and not worry about the end result. Within 10 mins of the restart, Clissold Park got a free kick right on the edge of the box and struck it sweetly into the top corner. It was game on.

We continued to strive and create a few chances. Hawkins was let loose one on one with the keeper, who made a great save. The famous Richardson Evans dodgy bounce stopped Joe from bundling the ball in the back of the net. It looked like extra time was on the cards, and nobody had 30 more mins left in the tank. Out of nowhere, the winner came. Coops brought the ball down and laid off to Dan Kloss (a Friday night call-up) who struck from 30 yards a wonderful driven shot that pinged straight past the keeper. Goal of the season already sorted.

We managed to hold on for the 2-1 win to go through to the next round of the cup. A great victory for the 5s and will hopefully be a springboard for a season full of silverware. Well played lads.
