AFC Premier / Report by Dean Taylor

In the third instalment of the battle of Richardson Evans, the Borough had a strong 14 in their squad and there was a belief all around that this would be the day they finally came out on top after the two previous hard-to-take defeats against their noisy neighbours.

From the off Wandsworth were on the front foot and with less than five minutes on the clock the first chance of the game presented itself, Tom Ullyott tried to finish very quickly (for the 2nd time in 12 hours) but somehow struck the post from all of one yard out.

The first goal did come soon after though for Thomas and it was class. Harley picked the ball up on the left and drove past his man to the byline and pulled back perfectly into the path of Ullyott, who this time side-footed home with aplomb.

The lead wasn’t to last for long though as OT’s went straight on the attack from kick-off and won a corner which was headed home. It was a nice header but the OT’s striker wasn’t really made to work for it as the marking in general was slow and half-hearted.

The Borough could then have found themselves behind when a corner pinged to the edge of the box was headed back in and fell to the feet of two completely unmarked OT's attackers, fortunately, they kind of got in each other’s way and a shot was hurried and stabbed wide.

This was a let-off for the Borough and they were then awarded another bit of good fortune when a throw-in to the OT’s area was dealt with poorly and as the ball dropped in the six yard box, Wandsworth makeshift number nine Taylor was not out in the channels, but instead in the right place at the right time to calmly slot home.

The Borough lead was then quickly doubled as Sam Rose floated a lovely cross into the box hoping that there would be a number nine there ready to pounce... there was as Taylor got between the centre backs to nod home for a quick double.

Taylor’s exhibition of how centre-forward could be played was then cruelly cut short as he twanged his ageing hamstring. He signalled he had to be replaced and so the Gaffer called for Barwick, hoping that he had been taking notes and would be able to pick up where Deano had left off. Unfortunately, Barwick had snuck off a couple of minutes earlier for number twosies. He explained post-game that he had been sh****g himself that his position up top may be under threat long term having already seen Sam Driver come in and replace him as number one earlier on in the season. So with Joe otherwise engaged, Pym stripped himself ready and came on up top instead.

At half time the gaffer wasn’t as pleased as he might have been, being particularly upset with the free header that was OT’s goal and also the number of silly fouls that we were giving away. Barwick was back from the toilets by this time and the gaffer decided it was time to get a proper striker back in the number nine slot again... so he switched Pymmy with Pat.

With 35 mins left to go Des finally relented before Joe completely chewed his ear off and he brought Barwick on. With a belly full of fire it wasn’t long before Joe gave a reminder of what he is capable of. Pym gave him the ball in the box and with a nice touch to set himself fired home a lovely scuffer with his left foot.

At 4-1 and cruising, the standards slipped a bit and Baker was called into action to make a trademark wonder save in his last outing of the season before he heads off to pick up his cricket bat.

The final chance of the game came from an OT’s corner. The ball was cleared out to Pat who then played a pinpoint pass forward which set Rolfe free. He rounded the keeper and looked set to end his one-on-one hoodoo but as he rolled his shot goalwards an OT’s defender slid in to turn it away. Chisel tried to get in on the action but went agonisingly close from the resulting corner.

The game finished 4-1 to the Borough for the second week in a row leaving Des pleased but still with something to work on as he pointed out that we have conceded straight after going ahead too many times this season.

The post-game votes were shared around with honourable mentions for Da Silva and Ullyott but it was Taylor who just pipped them to pick up the man of the (quarter of a) match.

A fortnight break now before the final game of the season against likely champions Old Hamptonians.
