AFC: Premier / Report by Des O'Hare

Andy Pym is making a habit of scoring high-quality late goals. Having played the first half at left back then after a rotation, moved into the fray at left mid he got himself in the UCL box in the 90th minute.

At that point, Borough were 1-0 down and facing an unwarranted defeat.

Ullyott, who had made an immediate impact arriving late at the game, and in the box, chipped a beautiful ball into the 6-yard area. A half-clearance from a resolute UCL defence fell to Pym just inside the right-hand side of the penalty area. His falling volley was struck sweetly, left-footed top corner to the keeper's right: no chance of saving it, 1-1, one point apiece. A critical moment and one of high quality.

In a weather-affected game it was always going to be tough for both sides. Credit to both that they tried to play football and at times, a game broke out in between the RE Twisters.

The visitors had started brightly no doubt mindful of Borough 1s' strength when getting ahead. In Feb these teams met in Watford and Borough ran out comfortable winners however UCL had a few new faces and were much more coherent in their approach.

UCL had a good first 10 mins and after that Borough took control. The late-arriving Ndlovu (there is a theme developing here), stretched the game by running riot down the right-hand side. He squared one beautiful ball to the late arriving (enough already - you get the idea... lots of players were late!)... anyway he squared the back to Barwick who had a good shot well saved by the keeper.

Minutes later Da Silva, having his best game for some time, drove in a beautiful cross from the left and with Weston arriving at the far post on the volley the script was being written for a world-class volleyed goal. Weston made a beautiful run, got a superb connection with his instep, and we are now one match ball light (worth checking if in fact it’s landed yet). Nevertheless, a superb move and Borough had momentum.

Pat Murray was playing centre mid and doing so to great effect, working well with Bell and Taylor they dominated the centre of the park. Bell was pulling the strings going forward and starting to grow into his new team role. With Da Silva and Ndlovu pushing down the flanks looking to hit Barwick early in the box it looked a really promising set up.

UCL's approach was now clear: defend deep and be committed: they did both, well.

Gibb got forward a few times and had a few really promising strikes very well defended. Ndlovu danced past defenders at will however the finial finish eluded him. Pym almost scored directly from a corner. Lots of half chances: maybe a little more than half, but no goals.

The focus after 45 mins was on more of the same however within minutes of the restart completely against the run of play UCL went ahead. Their no 9, off the bench, danced past some lightweight Borough tackles (think England Rugby 2nd half tackles Vs Scotland), cutting in from the Borough left side he coolly slotted home.

Tough to take and in the weather a significant notch as the game was constantly broken up so hard to retain real momentum.

Borough rang the changes with Nicholas, Rolfe and Ullyott getting involved. The freshness created a sense of urgency, as did the rotation of players through the half.

A shot on goal from Bell, UCL defender, in the box dives to defend the ball and clearly handles with his outstretched arm. The referee gives nothing (VAR cannot be far away in the AFC Prem).

Borough forced multiple corners, Taylor had a header just off target, Mackenzie had a similar chance well saved. UCL backs to the wall, Borough patiently trying to force a breakthrough.

With 85 mins on the clock, Ullyott released Ndlovu who beat his man (again) and squared to Rolfe 8 yards out and in space. He took a touch and fired to the keeper's left. The keeper got a hand to the ball, however, it looked like the ball would still go in. The ball bounced on the line and span back to safety - helped by a force 10 blow just at the wrong time for Borough.

To spectators that may have felt like game over, however Borough showed a resolute mentality, kept patient and kept working for the game / simply refusing to give up.

As the clock struck 90 the left foot volley rewarded this endeavour and intelligent football and proved that regardless of the weather there is always time for Pym(s).
