A trip to Warlingham to play John Fisher is one nobody ever looks forward to. It's nowhere near any public transport, the car park was full and the opposition are generally a bunch of...
Surprisingly though the 4s all arrived on time and didn't know what to do with themselves. There were introductions to be done though, as several new players were called up as half of the regular squad had conveniently made themselves unavailable for the trip.
Simmo attempted to lead the warm-up, but all he managed to do was show how skilled Killers is at leading the jogging and stretching. The highlight of the pre-game preparations was getting to sit in a dugout by the side of the pitch. The roof may have been destroyed and it probably should have been declared a public health hazard, but for 4 South this was a luxury.
Anyway, there was a game to play. John Fisher are like that annoying 12 years old who plays FIFA. They spend the whole game doing stupid skills and playing a formation with half the team upfront. They will win a lot of games, but when it doesn't go their way they will throw a temper tantrum.
That pretty much sums up this game. Borough had to spend a lot of time defending, and most of it was good. Well organised shape, plenty of blocks and tackles... but unfortunately a few mistakes at crucial times meant the game slipped away.
An early John Fisher goal was cancelled out by Jack Stevens who finished a good move. The lead was quickly re-established though as their striker turned and fired into the bottom corner from 20 yards. Jack Stevens stepped up again early in the second half to fire home his second and bring the teams level.
From here on it was all John Fisher though. A breakaway goal made it 3-2. Fisher thought he had more time than he did to make a tackle, and gave away a pen that made it 4-2. Something else happened for 5-2 and then a header from a free-kick finished the game at 6-2.
Despite the scoreline there were plenty of positives to take. Barnish in goal is a great signing and will be giving Willmer a run for his money. Stevens, Denham, Helyar and Browning all did well on their 4s' debuts against a tough side. McManus properly clattered their right-winger who was quite deserving of a 'full but fair' tackle.
Meads up next and a great chance to get back to winning ways.
