Boro vets continued their post lockdown 3 run of friendlies with a game against Economical Vets. With Plumtree otherwise engaged in the fifth team game on pitch 13 the vets needed to find an extra player as well as someone to go in goal for the first half. Luckily John Sweeney was watching the 6 team & agreed to play for us.
With Murphy refereeing & Deacon in goal the prematch chat was of making the ball do the work on a hot April day. Luckily the defence marshalled by Sweeney & Harris meant the stand in keeper had little to do with only one shot - well off target. Boro dominated possession but could not make that count. Their keeper had a great game whilst they defended well & has some luck whilst we rued a series of misplaced final passes So 0-0 at the break.
With Plumtree now in goal, Deacon as ref & Murphy on in midfield, Boro looked to rotate our players as we now had the addition of Taf also from the fifth team game. It took the helping hand of their keeper to enable us to take the lead as his misplaced pass out of the box only found Atkinson who calmly lobbed the ball into the net. That should have opened the floodgates but somehow we could not find the all important second goal. We were indebted to Plumtree as in the dying minutes he produced a superb save down to his left as Economicals finally got a shot on target. With time running out Nicholas produced a quality corner for McNally to power a header in. Votes for a few players in POM but two old timers Ashley Stevenson & John Sweeney topped the votes with the former topped the charts. Thanks to Joe Donegan, Rob McNally & Andy Proudfoot for coming along support. Thanks also to Tim for reffing the second half.
