Our previous game with Jamrock had proved a tight battle with Boro winning 2-1, but we came into this game with no action for a month whereas the opposition had managed a couple of games during the recent deluge. A late pitch switch to the Glaxo Smith Kline in Ealing meant the game went ahead on grass as most games in the club were called off.
On a tight pitch the opposition looked to dominate the middle of the park & release their dangerous strikers, but with McNally & a returning Atkinson (first game for five months) putting a shift in there was a level of parity in this area. Boro had the best of the early chances but failed to take them. Plum had already made one great save to keep the scoreline blank, but Boro were undone when a Jamrock corner was only partially cleared & their dangerous striker fired home through a crowded penalty area.
Then in a mad final 15 minutes of the half the goals started flowing. First Westy brought us level with a near post finish following good work from strike partner Renwick & then gave Boro the lead following a great pass from Atkinson. We could have increased our lead when McNally was brought down in the box but the ref waved our protests away as even the opposition could not believe how a penalty was not awarded. Jamrock then equalised but I can't remember the details before Boro were undone by a long ball through the middle to take the lead going into half time.
Despite being behind the talk at the break was one of going for the victory. With Carl Nicholas due to leave for the second team cup game being played later that day, we took the opportunity of bring on Chris Purvis (making his first Boro appearance for five years) for Dejan, knowing that we could then switch Chris to full back & bring Dejan back on in midfield when Carl had to go.
With Boro dominating possession, but Jamrock looking dangerous on the break, it took a while for us to get the equaliser, but when Stevenson had a cross blocked his second attempt found its way to Renwick who fired home. Pete was then taken out in the middle of the park which the ref deemed as no foul despite Pete's protests. This resulted in the Vets' first-ever sin binning but funnily enough, Jamrock could not take advantage of their numerical superiority.
With Nicholas off to the second team game, Boro held out until Pete was able to return although we survived a couple of narrow offside decisions which went in our favour – the ref deciding he did not need linesmen even though he rarely strayed more than ten yards into each half! Somehow in amongst this drama, Harris got booked for failing to respect the required distance at a restart.
With about 8 minutes to go Boro got the winner as Atkinson's through ball found Hoar racing through the middle outpacing the defender only to be taken out by their keeper on the edge of the box, & as we waited for the ref to blow for a penalty Westy seized on the loose ball to convert from a tight angle. Then it was a question of holding on as Jamrock threw everything into getting an equaliser but Boro stood strong.
A great team performance from the whole squad.Plumtree was Man of the Match for some great saves as well as carrying on having been clattered at a corner, with Atkinson the only other player to get more than one vote. Hat-trick hero Westcott got a solitary vote but then we just expect him to score the goals as a matter of course. Thanks to Steve Dulley for coming along to support.
