Man of the Match: Pete Renwick

Back in Chiswick to play Chelsea Vets for the third time this season & smarting from the 3-7 beating they had given us at the beginning of March it was a determined squad that gathered for the game. With traffic bad there were some late arrivals although no one was as late as the ref - our "friend" from last week. Whether it was the late kick off but Boro hardly got out of the blocks before we found ourselves a goal behind. Their tall centre midfielder got a shot away which Plum pushed away for a corner. We should have known what would happen next as their playmaker Tommy whipped the ball in & it came through a crowd of players to hit Carl Nicholas at the back post & go into our net. From this potentially disastrous start Boro got themselves back into the game with Rivers & McNally not giving Tommy & the other Chelsea midfielders time to settle & Boro looking dangerous on the break. When Donegan was played in down the left his low cross was fired home by Rivers to bring the scores level. Boro were on the front foot & only a couple of border line offside decisions prevented us from increasing our lead. The decision to move the ball forward quickly was paying dividends & when Nicholas hit a superb pass over the defence Westcott did what he does best & put the ball into the back of the net. Phil then broke through but their chasing defender pulled up with a nasty Achilles injury & after a delay in proceedings the ref blew early for half time whilst the injured player was helped off.

As the watching Phil Murphy said apart from the first & last five minutes of the first half we had controlled the game & that our plan to move the ball forward was working. So it was a case of doing the same in the second half. With Chelsea temporarily down to ten men Boro started quickly & Renwick (I think) increased our lead firing home a low cross. Back came Chelsea & from a corner that was only partially cleared their tall midfielder fired a great shot into the top corner. Game on as Chelsea were now back to full strength but now Boro took control & played some great football as Chelsea could not cope with the pace of Renwick, Westcott & Hoar prompted by Donegan, McNally & Rivers. With the defence of Hands, Harris, Hogan & Nicholas all taking turns to step into midfield to prevent us being outnumbered there we scored some great goals. Westcott completed his hat trick & could have had more as their keeper saved well from him & Donegan hit the rebound wide. Hoar finished off another fine move with a well deserved goal but Renwick scored the best goal with a cheeky back heel from a Hoar cross that had the watching crowd applauding. Chelsea kept going but we were restricting them to long range efforts & when they did break through Plum smothered a couple of close range efforts. Again we created more chances with Murphy sending Renwick away down the left but we could not finish. As the ref blew the final whistle a jubilant Boro team celebrated a well deserved victory. Thanks to Andy Proudfoot, Bob McNally & Joseph Donegan for being the Boro support. A great team effort from all twelve players saw the man of the match votes spread around with Nicholas, Harris, Hoar all getting votes but Pete Renwick took the honours by a single vote from Westcott & Hogan.
