With a few people away thankfully John McKenna & Mark Harris's brother Sean answered the call to play Centymca & so prevent the manager from having to do 90 mins. With the day almost being four seasons in one day as we approached the lovely large but slightly sloping pitch it was hailing! Luckily that stopped as the game kicked off & the sun came out for the majority of the game
Boro started well pressing all over the pitch & not letting Centymca settle on the ball. With Nicholas delivering some quality crosses & corners we hit the bar early doors from one such cross through a McNally header. With the team utilising the large pitch both Hoar & McKenna were seeing plenty of the ball as we attacked down the flanks. Our first goal came from a Nicholas corner that was put into their own net by a Centymca defender under pressure from Hands. With McNally & Woolley controlling the middle of the park it was the latter who extended our lead. Winning the ball in midfield he strode on & smacked a shot passed their keeper. Quality. Our lead could have been bigger at the break as McKenna made a similar break although his shot did not trouble the keeper. With Plum only having to make one save of note, diving to his right to keep out the only shot on target Centymca had in the half.
Kicking off with the slope in our favour Boro had a shaky ten or fifteen minutes as our passing went astray & we let Centymca get a hold of the game. The nearest they came to a good chance was when a cross hit the overhanging branches of a tree over our goal & the ball fell loose. Luckily Plum grabbed it & all was good. Then we came into the ascendancy as the opposition tired & we rolled fresh legs on with Simon Ritchie showing no ill effects from having run the marathon the week before, as had McKenna to be fair. We really should have scored more than the one goal as we created some good chances but mainly our final ball or shot was not the best. Both forwards Renwick & Backovic worked hard, coming short but also looking to run in behind. When Sean Harris came on he showed some nice touches & one almost Cruyff turn. Jamie Mac got a goal from a Hoar cross & could have had another if he had hit the target. With Centymca looking to score by leaving men up as we pressed, good defensive work from the back four of Hands. Dulley, Mark Harris & Nicholas ensured we kept our clean sheet.
A great team performance with everyone playing a part, which showed in that eight people got MoM votes with joint winners in Hands, Woolley & McNally.
