Man of the Match: Jamie McNally

With Boro Vets joining the West London Vets League next season we have been looking to play some games against teams in the Premier League to test ourselves in preparation. Having played Kew Park on a few occasions in previous seasons we knew this would be a good test for us & so it proved. With the kick off at midday it was a strong squad that assembled in leafy Twickenham but Boro stated slowly & found themselves a goal down after just five minutes. Boro gave the ball away cheaply in our own half which allowed their dangerous striker to fire a shot in that Vinny Cibardo did well to save but the striker fired the rebound home. With Kew Park only playing one forward & overloading the midfield it too Boro time to get into the game although Jamie McNally was winning all the headers in midfield. Boro equalised when Westcott played in strike partner Rivers to score & level the game up. Boro then had a blatant penalty denied as a Westcott shot was handled in the area. Both teams stopped waiting for the inevitable penalty to be awarded but the ref waved play on. Unbelievable. With Hogan ably supporting Jamie we were getting a grip on the game although chances were at a minimum. On 30 mins we made a couple of changes as Brooks & Nicholas came in to replace Hoar & Donegan out wide. With Dulley or Harris stepping into midfield to match up the opposition we finished the half strongly & took the lead just before halftime when a Nicholas corner was headed back across goal by McNally for Rivers to head in his second goal.

Half time seemed to reenergise Kew Park as Boro were sluggish getting into the game & the scores were levelled when Boro conceded a penalty as the ball was not cleared from a corner & as it pinged around our box Mark Harris took man before ball. Funnily enough the ref gave that one & their player scored. With Boro a bit shell shocked Kew seized the initiative & took the lead with a goal I can't remember the details of. Boro then missed a couple of good opportunities as Nicholas broke down the left & fired a shot over. With Donegan & Hoar back on to provide fresh legs, both Westcott & Hoar spurned good opportunities at the far post. Then came the turning point Hoar chased a long ball into the Kew box & was brought down by their full back. Shoulder to shoulder said the ref much to the disbelieve of both teams as yet another penalty for Boro was waved away. An infuriated Steve Dulley had words with refs got booked, did not stop questioning the refs decision & was sent off. The sense of anger on behalf of Wandsworth & a bit of complacency on the part of Kew galvanised Boro & we clawed our way back into the game. Hoar dashed down the right & his cross was put into the back of the net by Westcott. With Kew rocking & not putting much pressure on our back line it was Boro who were looking for the winner & it came from Westcott flicking on a corner for Rivers to slam home. Justice done & it was just a case of running the clock down. The last minute was well over three but finally it was game over. One would have thought that Rivers would have been a shoe in for man of the match with a hat trick but the honours went to Jamie McNally with Dom & Chris Hogan also getting votes. A great team performance with the whole squad putting in a shift.
