AFC: 3 South / Report by Danny Brier

Borough 3s came into the game full of confidence after showcasing some slick football last time out, netting 6 times. The pitches had finally seen some rain, perfect conditions for the 3s to pick up where they left off right? Wrong! After walking across numerous good pitches, we settled on something that wouldn’t look out of place in the 1980’s – a sign of things to come…

Borough started well, pressing high and dominating midfield. A number of close moments where the final ball was missing or it just wouldn’t drop to a red shirt. The first real opening came when Will burst from midfield and broke their defence only for the finish to be missing.

With Borough still on top, the opposition's winger accelerated down the left, looping a high cross towards goal which was unfortunately misjudged by Andy in goal, who could only tip the ball against the post before is nestled in the back of the net. 1-0 Guildfordians.

Desperate to find the equaliser before half time Borough press on, Jamie coming close with a long-range effort that fizzes wide. In a final push before the whistle Ed bursts down the left and into the box, has he got the legs to find the pullback to a red shirt….? No – instead he takes a leaf out of the Klinsmann/Bruno Fernandes playbook and throws himself to the ground, fooling no one. The oppo are furious but not half as much as Andrew who makes his feelings known. I think it’s safe to say Ed won’t be diving again!

HT Guildfordians 1-0 Borough 3s.

The second half becomes scrappy as the pitch further deteriorates, a chance falls to the oppos striker who went through one on one only for Andy to pull off a sublime save high to his left, making up for the earlier error.

For the final 15 Borough resort to the same direct tactics adopted by the oppo the full 90. A long diagonal from Bench is cushioned down by Danny but Archies finish is well saved. Roles reversed in the final minute when Archies header drops into Danny's path but his volley is somehow saved by the outstretched leg of the keeper.

FT Guildfordians 1-0 Borough 3s. A scrappy game that Borough definitely deserved something from. A hard one to swallow, but we go again!
