AFC: 4 South / Report by Tom Andrews

This weekend saw the 3s travelling to New Eltham to face Old Sedcopians in the league. As each week passes, each week becomes a must win for the 3s if we wish to stay up. Although traffic delayed a few of the squad, it was clear from the start that everyone had their mind set on winning, with a good warm up and focused on the task at hand.

During the first twenty minutes it would be fair to say Old Seds looked the most likely to score, applying plenty of pressure up top and utilizing their target man at the top well. The 3s weathered the storm of numerous corners and attempts on goal well but decided an early change was needed. That's right Mike Bassett fans, the return of 4-4-2.

The change to 4-4-2 had been communicated pre-game, each player knowing where to slot in as soon as the call was made. Not 5 minutes after the change taking place the Borough were comfortably in charge of the game, playing flowing football making sure to complete a pass and communicate with one another maintaining possession.

Continued pressure from the 3s resulted in Purdue sinking the first of the match. Some might say this was tactical masterclass from Scott Cozens-Smith subbing himself off after 30 minutes bringing Hearty into the mix to add something different on the right-hand side. Selfless by Scotty Cozens-Smith.

Half time. 1-0. The easiest half time talk Andrews has had to give, “Keep it up, to a player we’ve been excellent so far”.

Second half, wind behind us.

The route one football Seds had adopted in the first half was not too much concern for the 3s defence, the ball now sitting up in the wind ensuring the midfield and back line had time to review and attack the ball mid-air.

Not long into the second half and Werger strikes. 2-0 and Borough well, well in control.... right? Well, other than Andrews tripping himself up and gifting Seds a 1-on-1 with Belger which thankfully wasn’t converted... if the 3s awarded a d*ck of the day I think I know where it would have gone.

A rather rare Seds attack in the second half saw them take possession on the right wing, crossing a ball in for either Andrews or Belger to deal with.... they both attempt to deal with it taking each other out with the Seds attacker stood there to tap in from the post... 2-1.

The 3s kept their heads up, remained positive and continued to apply pressure. Moon nonchalantly strolled into the Seds' box from the left wing, and drives home. 3-1.

Scotty Cozens-Smith returns to the field and misses possibly the easiest chances of the game but buries one of the hardest, from the left of the box he smashes it into the top right!

Full time.

Excellent play from the 3s, and full credit to Seds for their attitude and reception at the post-match venue. Roll on next week!!
