2s report

Wandsworth made the long trek to Hackney Marshes for their furthest away day of the season, facing a Chattan side they failed to beat last year. Chattan had a reputation as a physical, no-nonsense outfit, and they certainly lived up to it. The bobbly pitch, still recovering from the dry London summer, made it tough for either side to get the ball down and play.

The first half was a cagey affair with neither side really clicking, but Chattan struck first with a decent strike from outside the box. Wandsworth responded well and got a few good balls in behind, but couldn't find the finish. Things started boiling over when the ref somehow kept his cards in his pocket after a horrible cynical hack on Wandsworth's Nick Sawaday, and the tension stayed with both sides into the break.

A few home truths at half time did the trick, and Wandsworth came out with a clear focus on getting it on the deck and playing better football. Wandsworth started better with some passing between defence and midfield. The better football paid off early in the second half when Archie Beckley picked out a peach of a ball over the top for Press, who slotted home the equaliser. 1–1, game on.

Boro kept knocking on the door and created some great chances, just lacking that final touch. They made the most of their long throw specialists, Jack Martin and Archie Beckley, who caused problems all afternoon. It finally told when Beckley launched one into the box and Press glanced home a header to make it 2–1, the pair combining for the second time on the day.

With the ref struggling to keep a lid on things, it stayed feisty throughout. Unfortunately Chattan caught the Wandsworth defence napping from a quick throw, and despite keeper Belger getting fingertips to it, the close-range effort squeezed in. 2–2.

Both sides went hammer and tongs to the final whistle, and Corey was unlucky not to nick it late on for Wandsworth, with Chattan clearing two efforts off the line in the dying minutes.

A point away from home against a tough side isn't the end of the world, even if it'll feel like two dropped for Wandsworth. There are plenty of positives to take into the home fixture in the second half of the season, and on this showing Boro will fancy their chances.
