After the emotional wreck of the semi-final defeat, it was imperative the Red Tops didn't let their league campaign start to slip.
The week off between games was just what the doctor ordered as the lads flew out the traps at kick-off. The high press was back, the ball being swept from flank to flank and balls flying into the box within the first 5 minutes and we were back to the accustomed slick Borough 2s' style.
Top scorer Cozens-Smith capitalising on some great build-up down the right, Ballard marauding into the box past defenders and laying the ball on for Cozens-Smith to smash home. 1-0.
The pressure continued and a few moments later Pickles struck to claw back a goal in the hotly-contested 'Race to 20'. Some free-flowing football down the middle saw a Rolfe attempt from the edge fall at the feet of the big man who took a touch before calmly stroking the ball into the net. 2-0 and thoroughly deserved.
2-0 soon became 3-0 with probably the best move of the game... (but not before Seds' best chance of the game which Pickles has forgotten. A dubious call of a foul throw against Kennedy, left him seething and distracted as the opposing striker weaselled his way through the Borough defence and lashed a shot into the top corner. Belger was well beaten, but the older Faure, distracted by a butterfly was wandering across the goal line only to be struck in the head, turning the ball out for a corner). A sweeping break at pace saw some fast passing between M. Faure and Pickles with Watson released into space behind the fullback. The winger proceeding to deliver yet another pinpoint cross this season and finding the head of Pickles at the front post.
Half-time came and very much a statement being made to the rest of the league.
After a very positive first-half performance - with some delicious half-time jelly babies - the Borough anticipated scoring more goals and maintaining their aggressive, but controlled, style of play.
It was evident that multiple players were in the mood for scoring, Glover being a strong candidate, but Rolfe was persistent and the time finally arrived. Rolfe cut in from the left, drifting past several players, finding the feet of Outhwaite. Holding the ball up, Outhwaite drilled the ball to the edge of the box to find Rolfe, who confidently struck the ball in the back of the net... “F*****!” Rolfe shouted, as though it had been disallowed by VAR.
As the opposition's heads were dropping, Borough continued this powerful display. A Sedcopians' goal-kick resulted in Glover winning a great aerial challenge, finding the feet of Rolfe (oh, what beautiful vision you have, Glover!). Rolfe took a touch forward and curled the ball around the keeper... 5-0!
Having scored two goals, it was time for Rolfe to exit the pitch to a standing ovation, alongside Watson - who had a solid performance down the left-wing. Could there be another goal... yes!
A tasty ball forward from the right side found the feet of Scotty - who held the ball up with confidence and then released the ball into Welger's stride. Driving with the ball, drifting past the defender, Werger slotted the ball home for 6-0! 'Oh, ya beauty!'
What a strong team performance. If these performances are maintained, Borough can expect to win silverware this season. Some say Rolfe brings the good fortune - yet to lose a game with the 2s…
Until next time, “There may be people that have more talent than you, but there’s no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do.”
Up the Borough!
