RED TOPS KEEP ROLLING!

RED TOPS KEEP ROLLING!

Richard Plumtree8 Feb 2019 - 23:20

AFC: 2 South / Report by Stu Pickles

After last week's devastating performance, the mighty red tops were home to Shene, an in-form side well in the title hunt. The build-up during the week saw the usually large squad very much depleted, with only 8 members initially available before Nicholson re-jigged an 85th birthday party, whilst Pat Murray flew back from the ski slopes to land at Richardson Evans just in time.

Borough started the game intent on continuing their good form, pressing high and playing with intent from the first minute. Last week's free-flowing football had resumed with Watson and Murray linking beautifully and with the ‘Shearer Sutton-esque’ partnership up top, carving the defence open.

The good start was rewarded from the high press, the visiting keeper having all his passing options cut off before attempting and failing to dribble round Pickles who dispossesed him to tap into an empty net for the first goal of the afternoon. 1-0 to the Borough.

The belief of a win was now beaming out of Wandsworth, and a second goal was more than deserved. Lambert released Pickles down the left flank, who whipped an early cross round the defence to the feet of his strike partner Butler, who composed himself to blast home into the goal hole.

Half an hour gone, Borough in control and well deserving of the lead. Shene, playing a risky passing game out of the back had been caught a few times, continued to probe and forced a corner down the right. The cross being dealt with well saw a deflected strike from the edge trickle into the corner, 2-1. But the wobbles from yesteryear have long gone, with Borough regaining their two-goal lead shortly afterwards.

Some good interplay in the middle from Marcus Faure and Santos saw Borough move up the field in another zippy passing move, Butler retrieving the ball in the box on the left, turning his man and picking out Murray at the back post who climbed above his marker to head home. 3-1 at half-time and another dominant display.

The second half was about grabbing the next goal and killing the tie. Chance after chance came, and shot after shot bobbled towards the goalie for an easy save. There were a couple of season debuts for the mighty 2s, with some impressive darting runs from Hearty carving open opportunities and a cameo for Gould who as well as missing a sitter, tried a tasty overhead! Shene also pushed further up the field in search of getting back into the game but a superb backline display from Lambert, Youngman, James Faure, and debutant Max held firm till the final whistle.

Yet another phenomenal team performance, three more points and the top of the table is getting ever closer! King's next week is another huge game and another huge performance needed – Up the Borough!
